*8 Things ~ Not to Miss in Your Twenties

Thursday, March 26, 2009
Join 8-Things

1. Spend time with your girlfriends ~ Don't let your boyfriend or love interest monopolize all your time. Now's the time to enjoy your youth, your freedom [from heavy-duty commitment and responsibility] and your friends. As time passes, and you grow older, and grow into family life, you'll find less and less time for yourself and for time spent with your friends.

2. Start saving your money now ~ Its never too early to begin saving. Saving = good. Spend-thrifting = bad. Think of saving as paying yourself first.

3. Live by yourself [i.e. on your own] ~ It may seem lonely and solitary, at first, but it will prove a invaluable experience that will pay dividends later in your life. Make sure that you can meet the challenge of self-sufficiency, before entangling your life with someone else's.

4. Use birth control ~ Its definitely not as glamourous and easy as it seems to go through pregnancy and raise a child. If you want to get pregnant so you can have someone to love you unconditionally, then get a pet.

5.  Travel,  work abroad,  spend time living abroad ~  Now - when you have none of the heavy-duty family responsibilities - you can afford the time, energy and cost of such an trip. Do it ~ you won't regret it.

6. Pay cash for everything, and if you can't, don't buy it ~ You will have hundreds of companies [department stores, banks, etc] convincing you that you need to get a credit card, a loan, or a line of credit from them. Ignore them. Refuse them. Bankruptcy and/or a poor credit rating will follow you around for longer than you can imagine. Don't mortgage your future opportunities for the present's tempting frivolities.

7. Forgive your parents for whatever you think they did wrong ~ They did the best they could. Parenting looks easy, until you get there. And, really, you'd end up wasting so much time and effort being angry. Get over it.

8. Take the career path that YOU want ~ Its likely going to make some waves when you tell your parents that you don't want to study X, but you want to study Z. Or when you tell them you have no interest in learning the family business. But, in the end, its your life. In the future you must live with the consequences of the choices you make now. Choose wisely and for the right reasons.

My Heart is too Small

Monday, November 17, 2008
I AM ANGRY. PERHAPS MY HEART IS TOO SMALL?

"If your cup is small, a little bit of salt will make the water salty. If your heart is small, then a little bit of pain can make you suffer. Your heart must be large."

“I would not look upon anger as something foreign to me that I have to fight...I have to deal with my anger with care, with love, with tenderness, with nonviolence.”

“Just because anger or hate is present does not mean that the capacity to love and accept is not there; love is always with you.”

“In a time of anger or despair, even if we feel overwhelmed, our love is still there. Our capacity to communicate, to forgive, to be compassionate is still there. You have to believe this. We are more than our anger, we are more than our suffering. We must recognize that we do have within us the capacity to love, to understand, to be compassionate, always.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh ~

Some Things on My Mind Right Now:

1. A challenge for those who call themselves CHRISTIAN ~ link

2. The planet has become too crowded for moral superiority and greed masquerading as altruism ~ lose the ego already.

3. I am tired of individuals who take, take, take from the bounty of others, and then cowardly run and hide when they receive their bounty. People like this just eat away at society, from the inside out.

4. God, give me the strength to overcome the anger of my ego ... and continue to love those who prove very hard to love. A great, painful anger oozes from my Self. Its so heated ... its vapourizing itself into my psyche. Its hurting me. Make it go away, please.

5. I still possess the capacity for love, despite this anger that sits upon my heart like a giant, heavy scab.

the nature of water

Monday, November 03, 2008
i am water ~
flowing to the lowest places,
sometimes stormy,
sometimes bottomless,
mostly, though ~
taking the shape of my surroundings.

happiness - a choice or a destination?

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Found at bee mp3 search engine

a dear friend
- a very wise, dear friend -
said to me one evening,
'happiness is a choice.'
i pondered this statement a while.
it seems to me
that so many of us live our lives
as though an ultimate destination or nirvana
will appear before us in a cloak of happiness.
do we suffer through the purgatory,
the protestant work ethic, and the bondage
of a profit-driven, capitalist society
in exchange for the grand prize of 'happiness' ... ?
or do we create our own
trickles and droplets of happiness,
which eventually pool into some cool-running stream
and flows through our existence?
try something. mindfulness - awareness.
savour the small details
over which you normally gloss.

how do you see happiness?
a choice?
a destination?

holding on

Saturday, October 25, 2008
Steve Winwood - Holding On
Found at bee mp3 search engine

i am 39 and holding.
holding? holding what?
... well ... everything.
and then ... slowly,
i begin realizing that
i cannot hold onto everything
forever.
children exist for a purpose
beyond the realm of their parents.
and, sometimes,
marriages dissolve.
i will turn 40 this year.
how did i get here, so soon?
and ...
did i ever imagine myself,
at 40,
prowling the dating scene?
i gasp, then sigh,
as i limp back
to my own forgotten base
like a damaged warplane.

the stitch-ripper

Saturday, September 27, 2008
Those who sew will agree that sewing stitches into any piece feels far easier that ripping said stitches out of said piece. It's sort of how love and life seem, ain't it? It goes without saying that the tighter the sewn stitch, the greater the difficulty in removing it, and the greater the likelihood of needle-poke scarring. And then, on re-stitching we find that the constitution of the fabric has weakened from that recent trauma. This makes cupid's sewing task more difficult.

3-D

Tuesday, September 02, 2008
The 3-D approach to living: deflate, deflect, or depart (from) negative energy/emotions.

We own our emotions ~ no one else does. That means they're our responsibility to modulate ... filter ... alter. No one makes us feel a particular way; only one's self does that. We create it ... we gotta live with it, ride it, so to speak.

So ... if you find yourself harbouring a bad attitude ... then change it! its no one else's fault, but your own. So ... remember change the things we can change, accept those which can't change.

I have a quote on my desk that I read often (and yet- never often enough) it says,
"No one is responsible for your happiness- EXCEPT you!"

The older I get- and the more people let me down- the more I realize how and where I pin my hopes on THEM...rather than looking to myself to make things right, and good, and satisfying.

Ultimately my happiness, success, joy, and fulfillment depend on me-
ME.
At once it's a tough thing to accept, and yet very liberating once I do.

My best to you friend- and in all things, make yourself happy.

I am with Cora on this one - I always keep myself in check with my daily attitude...I just go to the mirror, smile, count my blessings, and forget the small stuff.

dark caves and pillars of salt

Sunday, October 22, 2006
currently i'm reading wrestling with angels - a jewish interpretation of genesis. amazing. utterly elucidating. glowing with wisdom. the authors of this book have simply cast a bright light on an ancient, divinely inspired writings - revealings its timeless messages. i'd heard many of these stories so many times before. being catholic, of course, i'd never heard the story of dinah. hmmm. funny, that. repression, thy name is deviant.

the tendril of wisdom i wish to impart here in this post relates to the story of lot and his wife leaving sodom. you know the deal - despite the angels telling them on more than one occasion to go forth and not look back - lot and his family delay and delay and then when they finally do leave, lot's wife looks back and then gets turned into a pillar of salt. what happens here, in this story? why the procrastination, despite numerous urges to leave and escape an impending inferno? what, about looking back, causes lot's wife to become the most inert and lifeless substance? perhaps it had to do with her disobedience? NOPE. simply put?

when lot's wife looks back, instead of 'going forth,' she becomes a haunting metaphor for the perils of inertia. her preoccupation with the past literally paralyzes her in the face of danger, freezes her in time ... attachment to material possesions, coupled with denial of evil, can create a fatal blind spot. lot's wife, and the legion of procrastinators who have followed her through history, teach us that we suppress our instinctual flight response at our own peril

the wisdom of lot's story does not end with his wife's demise. oh no. there's more. recall the story of lot in the dark cave? after g-d plucks him away from the brimstone and destruction of sodom, lot makes retreat into a dark cave. somehow, he cannot seem to rescue himself from himself. i see this as a sort of looking back, don't you? extend the wisdom of the story of lot's wife.

can one really go forth while hanging on? NOPE, that's just common sense. symbolically no difference exists between hanging on and looking back - they originate from the same energy of inertia. and so, focussing so much attention and energy on past offences, angst, upheavels - it closes our spirits and psyches off to the possibilities and potential of the present. and ... the future.
